The Opportunity
Northwest Milwaukee needed both a replacement for an aging neighborhood library and housing for families in which grandparents are raising their grandchildren. Combining the two could create a stronger neighborhood anchor than either use alone.
The Challenge
The project required alignment among a public library system, a community development organization, affordable-housing financing and a highly specific resident population — all within a single mixed-use building.
The Approach
Stack complementary community uses: a new public library on the ground floor with 47 affordable apartments above, supported by family-oriented amenities and services.
The Result
Villard Square created a modern Milwaukee Public Library branch with 47 apartments above it for grandfamilies, bringing housing, learning, technology and gathering space together at a neighborhood crossroads.
Why It Matters
Mixed-use can mean more than retail under apartments. Pairing housing with a trusted civic institution created a durable community asset and a place where generations connect.
